Sillustani is a pre-Inca and Inca cemetery located 34 kilometers from Puno’s city center, around 40 minutes away. The funeral towers of Sillustani are located west of the city of Puno, on a high plateau near the beautiful Umayo lagoon.
Sillustani is considered as one of the most important necropolis of South America. Sillustani stands out because of its massive burial towers known as “Chullpas”. The “Chullpas” are stone towers that were built by several native people of the area, including the Collas and the Incas. The “Lizard’s Chullpa” stands out as the tallest in the site, reaching a height of more than 12 meters.
The royal trousseau of a nobleman was discovered near this burial tower, including more than 500 pieces of gold, which are now on display at the Carlos Dreyer museum in Puno.
In the area several “waru waru” can be found. The “waru waru” are manmade earth mounds used to protect crops from cold and flooding. With luck, you can see wild guinea pigs, flamingos, and other animales that live in the area.
